White Deer-"the ghosts of the forest"

White Deer from Wisconsin Public Television--Wisconsin reporter Joe Garrick gives a rare look at the elusive herd of white deer, a band of white deer near Boulder Junction, Wisconsin.  They were photographed over a period of ten years by nature photographer Jeff Richter.   John Bates, a well-known North Woods naturalist, researched the science and history of the white deer.  He is the author of the text of Richter's book White Deer.

Black Deer

They are called melanistic...the opposite of albino.  Black deer are more rare than the white deer.

Pictures were taken by RJ Verge near Beamsville, Ontario, Canada.
