Flicka's Boston Farewell

Celebrated mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade gave her farewell Boston performance to inaugurate the Celebrity Series of Boston 2009-2010 season. Also sharing the spotlight was her good friend renowned soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Dame Kiri gave her own farewell tour two years ago.

The program includes works by Mozart, Belioz, Poulenc Copland and Offenbach.

The performance had lots of encores, an adoring, appreciative audience, a great deal of banter and storytelling--all interspersed with moments of glorious singing.
Both Frederica and Dame Kiri gain audience rapport effortlessly with their delightful charm, warmth and wit. Both luminaries evince down-to-earth, genuinely sincere personae, and the palpable chemistry between the two ladies is endearing. The audience reacted with cheers and thunderous applause.

Frederica concluded the performance with Edith Piaf's signature, La Vie En Rose, gloriously sung, indeed, so beautifully sung that it brought tears to my eyes, a treasured memory with which to leave Symphony Hall.
